Roman blinds are elegant, timeless, and a popular choice for modern homes. But making them yourself can be trickier than it looks. Customers often requesting roman blind DIY kits, we provide but its not that simple to achieve a neat finish.
When fabrics aren’t suited to Roman blinds, the process can take nearly twice as long. Extra taping, pinning, ironing, and re-stitching are often needed just to keep the folds straight. Not so simple but below we provide some guidance.
Fabrics Not Recommended for Roman Blinds
Not every fabric is suitable. Here are the ones that give the most trouble, and why:
1. Soft, Loosely Knitted Fabrics
Roman blinds need firmness to fold neatly. Loose fabrics shift and stretch, making it difficult to align grains for straight lines. When combined with blockout lining, they often bunch at the sides instead of pulling up smoothly.
2. Soft Sheer Fabrics
These have the same issues as loosely knitted fabrics—too much movement and not enough structure. That said, there are some sheer fabrics that work beautifully, such as options that have more structure.
3. Woven Blockout Lining
Because of its thickness, this lining doesn’t sit flat. The stitching pockets end up uneven, and the blinds don’t hang in clean, straight lines. The issue becomes even more noticeable when paired with delicate sheers.
We do provide roman DIY kits but we are unable to provide further assistance, customer needs to be aware of the above considerations when undertaking to make their own Roman blinds.
Here is a range of roman blinds that are suited for roman blinds and cover by a guarantee.
